Lebanon is the second Arab producer of avocado

4-6-2015

The Program for Rural and Agricultural Development organized an intensive training workshop for farmers of the South on the production chain of avocado fruits. ARDP is a program implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and funded by the European Union which aims at enhancing the Ministry’s capacities on the legislative, monitoring and human resources levels. The workshop which lasted several days covered theoretical sessions as well as field trips to avocado orchards. The objective was to introduce farmers to various types of the avocado fruit grown in Lebanon, to ways of production of seedlings, preparation of the orchards, good agricultural practices, integrated pest control and various marketing approaches. Avocado growing is now considered as a very promising agriculture activity, having extended in recent years to thousands of acres of land in the coastal and central southern regions as well as in the North. As result, Lebanon is now the second avocado producer among the Arab countries and is available throughout the year. Domestic demand for the high quality Lebanese avocado is increasing, while the country is exporting part of its production to neighboring Arab and Gulf countries.
