Shehayeb positively reacts to milk producers’ demands

21-4-2016

The Minister of Agriculture, Akram Shehayeb, asked milk producers to submit a unified package of their demands to the ministry today, Thursday, that secures their interests and readdress the general situation of the sector. Shehayeb met earlier on Monday a delegation of representatives of dairy producers from across Lebanon and pledged to protect national production, and the interest of all producers in the sector. Among the actions under consideration are the following: keeping the pre-agreed price of milk at LBP one thousand per one liter, commissioning the Directorate of animal resources to asses the issue of powder milk consumption within two months, the setting up of a committee representing the relevant ministries to study the issue of consumption charge imposed on the different types of imported cheeses and milk and dairy products, ordering the security forces to close all un-registered factories. In the same vein, and in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Beirut and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization UNIDO, the ministry of industry organized a workshop entitled, ‘Food Safety in Dairy Products Processing’. On the occasion, minister Hussein Haj Ali called for easing the entry of Lebanese goods into world markets, warning that “the development of the economy cannot be based on grants and loans, and whoever wants us to attain economic and security stability should listen to our call.” (An Nahar, Al Diyar, Al Mustaqbal, As Safir, April 19 and 20, 2016)
