Commemorating IWD2018 & Mother’s Day

Coinciding with the International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day, the Bank of Beirut and Arab Countries (BBAC) launched for the fourth consecutive year a campaign celebrating women, through exclusive offers of banking products and services and through partaking in social and humanitarian activities that support women empowerment. BBAC’s action reflects a belief that ambitious women do wonders when given the right opportunities and that their achievements are crucial in shaping a brighter future. Meanwhile, the minister of state for women’s affairs, Jean Ogassapian, pledged during his opening of the ninth Mothers’ Exhibition at the Central College Jounieh that he will not spare effort or seize an opportunity to support competent women to reach decision-making and leadership positions. The exhibition showcased creations of School mothers including, glassware and glass paintings, artisan items, embroidery, jewelry accessories and traditional food. Likewise, Maison d’Art gallery organized an exhibition, ‘Mawtini’, at the new premises of the French Cultural Center in Saida, displaying paintings of 45 participants, art students and professional artists. The main themes focused on women, the nation and nature, as they all share the bountiful spirit of motherhood. The event also honored the ideal mother Hana Qassir. Iraqi women ambitious to work before marriage

Al Hayat newspaper published yesterday a feature on young Iraqi women in general who choose to get a job after graduation or even during their senior year before getting wed. The newspaper wrote, that while a number of young Iraqi men wish to marry a working girl to share household responsibilities, yet many want their wives to leave work after marriage in order to raise the children and do the housework as they presumably got used to their permanent presence at home. Al Hayat spoke to Dima Ahmad (22 years) in her senior year at the Department of Pathological Analysis, Baghdad University. Dima stressed that securing a job in the public or private sector after graduation will definitely protect her from the patriarchal hegemony of a husband who objects to his wife’s working. If she gets engaged while working, the partner cannot object later on as he approved her working prior to marriage. Similarly, Salma Ahmad boasted to Al Hayat reporter that she confronted her husband who asked her to quit her job after marriage and become a full-time mom. “When you married me I had a job, and we did not talk about me leaving my job,” she challenged her husband. Syria imports from Lebanon 119,000 tons of agricultural products and exports 100,000 tons

Despite, frequent talk in Lebanon about Syrian dumping, Syrian agriculture ministry source reported that exports of agricultural goods to Lebanon reached 100,000 tons (excluding dairy) during 2017, against 119,000 tons of made-in-Lebanon products exported to Syria, foremost of which are bananas exports. The exported and imported items, passing through Agricultural Quarantine Center, posted 78,862 tons (agricultural goods) and 39,990 tons (processed items) coming from Lebanon, the source added. Bananas topped the list of imports from Lebanon (22,83 tons), followed by wheat flour (19,477 tons), against 100,000 tons, (primarily apples) of Syrian exports into and through Lebanon during 2017. Meanwhile, a delegation from the Cooperative Association of Potato Farmers in Akkar headed by Omar Hayek, visited last week Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who, according to Hayek, was extremely responsive. Hariri reportedly conferred with concerned parties with the aim of reducing the imports of potatoes (from Egypt), securing markets in the Arab Gulf countries for the surplus and supporting maritime export of agricultural products, Hayek maintained. Women in 2018 elections… to be continued

On the increasing participation of women in parliamentary elections, Citizens Within a State movement led by former minister Charbel Nahas, announced yesterday its list of 11 candidates, including 6 women, Fadia Bazzi (Nabatiyeh-Bint Jbeil), Rania Masri (Baabda), Petra Semaha (Beirut 1st constituency), Josephine Zgheib (Kesrwan-Jbeil), Layal Bu Mussa (North 3rd constituency) and Nariman Shamaa (North 2nd constituency). On the political parties front, Al Akhbar newspaper wrote that the Lebanese Communist Part still supports Hala Abu Kasm, MD, for Marjeyoun-Hasbaya running against the Free Patriotic Movement candidate. Also yesterday, former prime minister Najeeb Mikati announced the ‘Azm’ 11-member electoral list for North 2nd constituency, which includes only one woman, Mirvat Howz. On the other hand, Rula Tabsh Jaroudi, recruited by the Future Movement for Beirut 2nd constituency, briefed the minister of state for women’s affairs, Jean Ogassapian, during a visit on Friday, on the section in her electoral program that supports the rights of Lebanese mothers married to non-Lebanon in granting nationality to their children. Tabsh maintained that she will work on endorsing laws that end discrimination against women and drafting new bills that play fair to them at the political, economic and social levels, while observing the particularities of sovereignty and Lebanon’s commitment to international conventions. Activities marking the International Women’s Day continue in Lebanon. In this respect, the British Ambassador to Beirut, Hugh Shorter, and head of the Department for International Development in Lebanon, Bruce Lawson-McDowall, hosted a panel discussion with members of the civil society representatives active in women empowerment under the theme, ‘Press for Progress on Gender Equality’. On the occasion, Shorter announced the launch of a new UK National Action Plan on women, peace and security under UN Security Resolution 1325 which places women at the core of the UK’s principles of conflict prevention, peace building, security and humanitarian risk which are key to promoting gender equality in the world. On the same day, the French Holy Family School in Jounieh honored media figure May Shidiaq and education professor Nada Mughaizel Nasr for their contribution to the winning of the school’s students in the Francophone contest on women and their role in society. Similarly, the Zonta Club of Beirut dedicated to empowering women through service and advocacy held a luncheon on March 6 during to launch a humanitarian initiative aimed at empowering female inmates at Barbar Khazen prison. The proceeds are used to teach inmates a profession that could help them lead a decent life after their release. Also, Sawa for Development association organized a talk at Kamed Al Lawz municipality, Beqaa, moderated by the coordinator of the Arab Institute for Human Rights Jumana Meri’ on women’s rights and the bigoted laws. My nationality is a right for me and my family demands accountability of candidates

On the International Women’s and Mother’s Day, My Nationality is a Right for Me and My Family Campaign staged a sit-in at Riad el Solh Square on Friday, March 16, under the slogan ‘My vote=My right’ demanding full equality in the nationality law. To recall, some 2500 protestors, including human rights activists and elections candidates from across Lebanon were present. Participants in the rally hoisted posters of candidates opposing or supporting their cause in preparation to hold them accountable when it comes to the ballot box. The Campaign coordinator, Karima Shebbo, said, “We’re sick of talking, we’re sick of sectarian excuses, democratic fears and racist attitudes… Every Lebanese mother has the right to live in this country. And as she gives life to her children, she gives them her nationality.” The vote of each and every Lebanese mother is equal to the right of a man in the ballot box and can therefore influence the elections outcomes, Shebbo maintained, pointing out that women in Lebanon are a priority that comes before the expats rights to reclaim their citizenship. Shebbo also addressed President Michel Aoun asking him to work on “putting into effect this priority that is ours,” as she said. MP Imad Hut who recently submitted a draft bill to the Legislative to amend the current nationality law joined the demonstrators. Hout stressed his full backing to the right of Lebanese women to give nationality to their children unconditionally. The demo also saw supporting interventions from women nominees, notably Jumana Haddad (Li Baladi list), Zoya Ruhana and Yusra Mumneh (Makhzoumi electoral list), 7 Party, the activist Jumana Meri’ and Rula Tabsh Jarudi from the Media Officer of the Prime Minister. Horeca 2018 from Lebanon to the world

Hospitality Services announced in a statement yesterday the opening of the largest exhibition for the hospitality and food industry, Horeca 2018 (March 20-23) at the Seaside Pavilion in Beirut. The annual trade show in its 25th edition is organized this year under the slogan ‘From Lebanon to the world’ highlighting the latest made-in-Lebanon essentials and solutions in the hospitality industry with the expected participation of more than 15 thousand exhibitors from the region and the world, the statement said. More than 350 local and international companies will showcase some 2500 famous brands allowing visitors a rare opportunity to discover the trendiest products, from food to kitchen equipment and accessories, up to packaging, packing and labelling services. Horeco 2018 will envisage an eventful program, 25 activities per day, including cooking competitions, workshops, forums and contests involving over 30 chefs from around the globe. SWI-Dar Al Aytam craft exhibition in Ghobeiri

The vocational center, Moassasat Ahd al Mihaniah affiliated with the Social Welfare Institutions (Dar al Aytam al Islamiya) opened yesterday its annual exhibition ‘My Works’ at its premises in Ghobeiri. The event featured creations by people with mental disabilities who have completed training and vocational rehabilitation in preparation for their integration in society. The expo included a range of products, including, traditional and handmade jewelry, leather, embroidery, handicrafts, soaps, distilled herbs and homemade sweets among other crafts items. The Social Welfare Institution, to note, takes into consideration the diverse aptitudes and skills of its beneficiaries where they can express and display their professional abilities to become active and productive in their own communities. Syrian women civil defense volunteers of Idlib

In its Monday’s issue, Al Hayat newspaper shed light on the 8-month old Women Civil Defense Center Idlib affiliated with the Civil Defense Directorate on the Syrian Coast. The only-women center (8 volunteers and rescuers) provides many services, including medical services, like first aid and treatment of wounds and burns, special services for women, like prenatal care, awareness campaigns on reproductive health and nursing courses, in addition to child-related services, according to the director of the center, Rihab Berni. Al Hayat learned that the female volunteers have started a campaign earlier this year to educate the residents and refugees on disaster risks, notably fire safety in refugee settlement camps and kitchens, unexploded war munitions and early warning systems of impending air strikes and best prevention methods. On the campaign, the media officer at the Latakia Civil Defense Directorate, Hassan Darwisho, stressed to Al Hayat that the center is operating in full, praising the distinguished tasks carried out by the women volunteers and their simple ways in provision of information. For her part, Hind Omar, a displaced Syrian beneficiary said the work of the center strengthens the role of women in society to a great extent and dismantle the stereotypical roles expected from them. PSP and the challenges to the agricultural sector in Lebanon

In cooperation with Fredrich Ebert foundation, the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) organized yesterday a national conference for agriculture under the patronage of chief Walid Jumblat represented by MP Akram Shehayeb. During the conference, PSP leadership council member, Walid Khattar, called for methodical government support to this vital sector and its workforce that makes nearly a quarter of the population, cautioning against an increased unemployment and a real revolution of the poor classes. It is urgent, Khattar said, to promote rural development, cut the migration of people to urban areas, encourage farmers to stay steadfast in their land and back the sector which is a keystone of the national economy. For his part, Friedrich Ebert Beirut resident representative, Achim Vogt, underlined the impact of agriculture on all the Lebanese, particularly in the capital Beirut, in terms of the quality and quantity of goods. He outlined the problematic issues faced by sector which are related to the size and caliber of production, prospects of its marketing and the State’s protection of agricultural products. In his turn, Shehayeb disclosed that the conference’s recommendations will set a roadmap for joint action to salvage and strengthen agriculture in Lebanon, promising to refer them to the concerned authorities, and to work hard through the available partisan, legislative and ministerial avenues in order to achieve them.
