Building Alliance for Local Advancement with USAID support

18-1-2018

The USAID funded Building Alliance for Local Advancement, Development and Investment (BALADI) initiative announced yesterday from Le Gray Hotel in Beirut the launch of 32 new development projects which will receive the support and in-kind assistance from the program. This comes after BALADI’s third call for funding municipal development undertaking in July 2017 which paved the way for a larger number of municipalities to submit projects responding to their community needs. On the occasion, Rene Moawad Foundation CEO Michel Moawad, said that the BALADI initiative has, since its inception in 2012, proved to be a crucial need for local municipal development. It especially targets municipalities that lack proper financial and human capacities to help them implement needed community development activities and deliver required public services, Moawad maintained. For her part, USAID Mission Director, Anne Patterson, pointed out that the Agency will provide more than USD 3 million in the form of equipment, installations, infrastructure, technical assistance and training for the implementation of new projects that alleviate economic and social burdens of Lebanese host communities. The new projects cover 7 sectors, namely: solar water heating, income generation, solar street lighting, health services, public education, electricity generation and solar-powered water supply. The above projects will engage municipalities, rural communities and non-government organizations across Lebanon. The article spotlights her charitable contributions to which she dedicates most of her time. Tawil grew up with her mother, an artist and a philanthropist herself. She was inducted into volunteering to help those in need since the age of twelve with special attention to working with the Islamic orphanage. “Women’s participation in peace building” in Zouk Mikael

17-1-2018

The National Commission for Lebanese Women (NCLW) and the Municipality in Zouk Mikael organized yesterday a seminar entitled: “women’s participation in peace building in Lebanon: dialogue and exchange of expertise in local governance”.  The event was held at the Municipality conference room and is part of the project entitled “strengthening women’s participation in local governance” which is implemented by both organisers with German funding.  This is also part of a series of seminars organized by the NCLW all over Lebanon since November 2017.  These activities aim to highlight the importance of women’s participation in decision making and peace building given its positive impact on local development and stability, as noted by NCLW’s president, Claudine Aoun Roukoz.  According to Roukoz, there is a need to reinvigorate the implementation of resolution 1325 through collaboration at the national, regional and international levels.  She added that a national working group has been created to that effect led by the NCLW and including representatives of various ministries and ministerial departments.  The task entrusted to the working group is to draw a national workplan for implementing 1325 in Lebanon in collaboration with concerned UN bodies and civil society organisations.  For his part, the head of the Zouk Mikael municipal council, Elias Beaino, emphasized the importance of women’s participation in decision making, since, according to him, “women constitute half of society”. War suffering of women of Idlib

16-1-2018

Al Hayat focused in its issue of yesterday on the spillover effect of the poor security conditions in Idlib, the area north of Syria controlled by opposition factions and its impact on civilians, especially women whose lives are already undermined by restrictive traditional norms. Such situation, the newspaper wrote, has exacerbated the misery of those women and completely changed their fates thus limiting their freedom of movement for the purpose of work or studying, where keeping safe has become the highest ambition. For more insight on the situation, Al Hayat spoke to women residents of Edleb. Khulood, one of them, said local inhabitants, in general, are extremely concerned about the security situation in the city, but the social status of a woman and the way the community judges her has made her yet more restrained. She lamented that a woman in Edleb has to think carefully about every detail of her life and behavior, while keeping in mind that she needs a male escort when she goes out, who is normally her son, husband or brother. “I cannot go shopping alone even in the neighborhood,” Khulood said. For her part, Batool Mohamad, from the town of Hanbushieh in the western countryside of Idlib, who works at one of the NGOs in the area, said that women are now used to this lifestyle. They stay home unless they have work to go to or school to attend, Batool grieved. For the full article, please visit the following link: (https://goo.gl/CM2oSL). (Al Hayat, January 15, 2018)

Women survive crisis better than men

16-1-2018

A new study on famine, slavery and epidemics published by the University of Southern Denmark has indicated that women outlive men in extreme conditions plagued by famine and disease epidemics. According to the study, the female sex hormones help women survive life-threatening health risks. It also showed that women are bolder and more determined than men who often tend to pull out under harsh and unfavorable circumstances. To note, the above study has covered 7 populations of both sexes who have been exposed to severe conditions in 20 or less years, like the Great Famines of Ukraine (1933), Ireland (1845) and Sweden, in addition to those affected by measles epidemics in Iceland between 1842 and 1882. After analysis of mortality data, the study found out that women outlived crisis for a longer period compared to men and that the average life expectancy of women is longer than men by an average of six months and up to four years.
