Project summary of the IDRC project by Nadine Haddad El-Hajj : In brief "One greywater (GW) treatment-and-use project in Lebanon has changed the beneficiaries' lives in many ways, providing recycled water for gardening and improving the beneficiaries' socioeconomic status. In Tannoura, West Bekaa, Lebanon – a remote rural town of the Bekaa Valley – where phase II of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) funded Greywater Treatment and Use Project is being implemented (2006–2008), female beneficiaries have been more affected than their male counterparts by this project."

In brief :"D3 Systems (the social research company which has served the research needs of an international clientele since 1985) has released its survey-based analysis of differences in the conditions and attitudes of women in Syria and Lebanon. The paper, entitled “Gender, Policy, and Public Opinion in Syria and Lebanon”, is the twelfth installment of D3's Women in Muslim Countries (WIMC) Survey Conducted in twenty-six Muslim-majority countries, the WIMC study is designed to measure women's empowerment in actual daily practice, providing a deep look into the oft-perceived gap between current public policy and empowerment initiatives and actual practice on the personal and local level."

تكون شبكة النسويات الشابات بمثابة شبكة إقليمية للناشطات الشابات المنفردات (١٨ سنة وحتى أوائل ٣٠) العاملات في المجتمعات العربية. وستوفر الأدوات والمهارات والمعارف التنظيمية اللازمة للناشطات الشابات للتجمع وحشد جهودهن بفاعلية أكثر لمعالجة القضايا المتعلقة بحقوق المرأة التى تعتبرنها مهمة بالنسبة إليهن.

وقد أدركنا أننا كناشطات شابات نعمل على القضايا المتعلقة بحقوق المرأة في المنطقة، نحتاج إلى أربعة أمور أساسية ألا وهي:

المساحة لاستيعاب وتعزيز الأفكار والنشاطات

المعرفة

المساحة لبناء الروابط

المساحة المتقدمة والشاملة والآمنة

وعليه، تسعى شبكتنا إلى تحقيق الأهداف التالية:

إنشاء مجموعة من الناشطات من شأنها خرق عزلة الناشطات الشابات وتوفير مساحة للعمل على مختلف قضايا المرأة.
توفير المعلومات والمعارف حول النسوية والتحليل النقدي لحركة حقوق المرأة في المجتمعات العربية.
أن نشكل منصة متقدمة لمناقشة كافة المواضيع الرائجة والمحرمة التي تؤثر على حقوق المرأة في المجتمعات العربية.
توسيع الخطاب حول حقوق المرأة في المجتمعات العربية كي يكون أكثر شمولا وتقدما وسياسيا.
We are a group of young Arab women activists building a collective network of support for young Arab activists in the region. We recognize that Arab young women face particular challenges and experiences of sexism. We also recognize the fragmentation and elitism of women's rights work in Arab societies. The group of us believes that an organized support network uniting young women activists working on an array of issues concerning women rights and coming from various perspectives and backgrounds is the perfect way to push women's rights organizing forward in the region.

"The aim of this network is to provide young Arab and Nordic scholars in the field of gender and politics with the opportunity to establish intraregional as well as cross-regional contacts with other PhD students and seniors in the same field and to provide additional academic supervising within the following research areas:
• Women's political empowerment (political representation, social movements)
• Policy changes and gendered rights (civil, political and social citizenship and violence against women)
• Labour market (gender segregation, equal pay, unemployment)
• Migration (including migrating care workers)
• Media, communication and cultural debates
• Religion

The purpose of the network is three-fold:
• to contribute to the development of research in the field of women in political life.
• to facilitate the exchange of theories, methodological approaches and empirical findings between young Arab and Nordic scholars.
• to facilitate contacts between senior and junior researchers in the field. Thus, the network will be of vital help to young scholars who are looking for international research contacts and who are in want of additional external supervision capacity."

Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) works nationally and in its home community of Washington, DC to build pathways to economic independence for America's families, women, and girls. WOW has a distinctive history in changing the landscape of women and work.

For more than 40 years, WOW has helped women learn to earn, with programs emphasizing literacy, technical and nontraditional skills, the welfare-to-work transition, career development, and retirement security. Since 1964, WOW has trained more than 10,000 women for well-paid work in the DC area.

WOW leads the National Women's Workforce Network, which is comprised of organizations committed to increasing women and girls' access to well-paid work, the Family Economic Security Program (FES), and the Elder Economic Security Initiative (Initiative).

In brief: "The Economic Commission for Western Asia (ECWA) was established on 9 August 1973 pursuant to the Economic and Social Council's resolution 1818 (LV). The purpose of setting up the Commission was to raise the level of economic activity in member countries and strengthen cooperation among them. It was also intended to meet the need of the countries in Western Asia for the services of a regional economic commission to promote the development efforts in the region.
In recognition of the social component of its work, the Commission was entrusted with new responsibilities in the social field by virtue of Economic and Social Council resolution 69/ 1985 of July 1985. Its name therefore became the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).
ESCWA has been located in a number of Arab capitals. It started in Beirut (1974- 1982), moved to Baghdad (1982- 1991), then to Amman (1991- 1997), and returned to Beirut in 1997, its permanent headquarter."
