In the region of ESCWA (Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia), the rate of women’s economic participation is lower that in any other region of the world. Why have improvements in women’s attainment of education not led to improvements in their economic participation? There are many barriers, socioeconomic and political circumstances as well as social norms and perceptions. In October 2012, ESCWA has published the results of a study aiming at answering this major question. The study investigates structural barriers (policy framework, socialization, regulatory and organizational structures) and it concludes by stressing the need for gender-sensitive economic and educational policies that are compatible with women’s rights).
