Although women continue to bear a disproportionate share of material, social, and civil disadvantage, there is a growing awareness that men in some contexts also face marginalization because of their gender roles and identity. The working paper is based on a research commissioned by the World Bank, and argues for a mature understanding of how gender, race, and poverty interlink to disadvantage particular categories of men, as well as women. Men and male gender concerns must be incorporated in gender and development interventions at the grassroots level, so that issues facing both sexes can be considered together.
