NCLW urges government to implement gender equality

19-9-2019

The head of the National Commission for Lebanese Women, NCLW, Claudine Aoun Rukuz, pointed out that, in Lebanon as in other world countries, women, like men, seek to realize their capacities unhindered. Women aspire to a society committed to gender equality and to a state which works to guarantee the principle of equal opportunities for all its citizens, she maintained. Rukuz, to recall, was speaking during her participation on September 17 in the Lebanese French ‘Les Elles de la Recherche’ conference to support women in scientific research held in Beirut (https://bit.ly/2mhfYdQ). Pointing to Article 7 of the Lebanese Constitution which clearly stipulates the principle of equality among the Lebanese, Rukuz stressed that government policies should effectuate this basic proviso. The main task of NCLW, she sustained, is to observe and ensure the vigorous implementation of this principle through submitting the institutional and legal reforms to this effect. The Commission is also involved in the preparation of an enabling social environment conducive to equal opportunity among genders, she noted. “These efforts can only succeed with the backing of all active forces in our society,” Rukuz concluded.
