Women Democratic Gathering condemns assault on women lawyer and journalist

10-6-2015

The Women Democratic Gathering condemned in a statement issued yesterday the repeated acts of violence against women. The statement denounced the police beating in broad daylight of a woman lawyer, as well as the case of an activist journalist allegedly accused of libel and slander by a well known media figure for her commitment to women’s rights against patriarchal and racist attitude. The statement read as follows: “The Gathering strongly denounces the assault in public against lawyer Rania Gaith which comes in the context of sustained violence practiced against Lebanese women that started with the arrogant attitude of Foreign Affairs Minister towards a diplomatic woman staff, followed by the beating and insulting of a woman civil servant by a Lebanese MP. The women group went on to say: “today we witnessed the battering in public of Lawyer Gaith by bodyguards of a Lebanese Minister, and noted with strong condemnation the prosecuting of a journalist and activist Hayat Mirshad who was summoned to appear before the Cyber crime Bureau for libel and slander.” (Al Mustaqbal, 10 June 2015)
