Young women fighting to revoke article 522 || Articles || Newspapers (Arabic)

31-05-2012

Lebanese women are often subjected to sexual assault. But when women turn to the law for protection, they are forced to sign a waiver to relinquish their rights. The perpetrator is protected by article 522 of the penal code, which acquits him in case he marries his victim.
The Nasawiya organization launched a campaign two months ago with the aim to revoke the misogynistic article.  Further, it aims to break the tradition of forcing victims to marry their rapists under the pretext of hiding in shame.
