Activities marking the International Women’s Day continue in Lebanon. In this respect, the British Ambassador to Beirut, Hugh Shorter, and head of the Department for International Development in Lebanon, Bruce Lawson-McDowall, hosted a panel discussion with members of the civil society representatives active in women empowerment under the theme, ‘Press for Progress on Gender Equality’. On the occasion, Shorter announced the launch of a new UK National Action Plan on women, peace and security under UN Security Resolution 1325 which places women at the core of the UK’s principles of conflict prevention, peace building, security and humanitarian risk which are key to promoting gender equality in the world. On the same day, the French Holy Family School in Jounieh honored media figure May Shidiaq and education professor Nada Mughaizel Nasr for their contribution to the winning of the school’s students in the Francophone contest on women and their role in society. Similarly, the Zonta Club of Beirut dedicated to empowering women through service and advocacy held a luncheon on March 6 during to launch a humanitarian initiative aimed at empowering female inmates at Barbar Khazen prison. The proceeds are used to teach inmates a profession that could help them lead a decent life after their release. Also, Sawa for Development association organized a talk at Kamed Al Lawz municipality, Beqaa, moderated by the coordinator of the Arab Institute for Human Rights Jumana Meri’ on women’s rights and the bigoted laws.
