Migrant domestic workers highlight the pitfalls of the Lebanese "sponsorship system" || Newspapers

Women domestic workers organised a flash mob on Beirut’s Corniche on Sunday September 23d. The event sought to highlight the pitfalls of the Lebanese "sponsorship system", otherwise known as Kafala which literally binds the domestic workers to their employers.  The event which was  organized by two non-governmental organizations, KAFA and Insan, drew a large crowd.  To be reminded that, according to existing sources, there are 200,000 migrant domestic workers in Lebanon all of whom bound by the "Kafala" system.   KAFA had presented a draft proposal to replace the kafala system to Charbel Nahhas, the formed Minister of Labor.  The matter was not put up for Cabinet discussion. KidProof Safety: sexual harassment will become part of the educational curriculum || Newspapers (Arabic)

In an interview for local Assafir newspaper, Darine Al-Masri, president of KidProof Safety described the most common incidents of violence that children are prone to in education establishments. These range from threats to children's personal safety, psychological and physical violence to sexual harassment.
 Al-Masri indicated that the KidProof educational curriculum will be a part of the essential educational curriculum starting the 2013-2014 school year. This project is now well into implementation with training of trainers being carried out in collaboration with the Centre for Educational Research and Development

Souk Al-Tayyeb exhibits home made food and crafts in Al-Shouf || Newspapers (Arabic)

The Shouf Cedars Reserve Association organized, in collaboration with the Maasser Al-Shouf municipality a “Souk Al-Tayyeb” event as part of the Jabalna festival.  
The event included exhibits of home made food and crafts.

Palestinian Women Forum’s roundtable on violence against women || Newspapers (Arabic)

The Palestinian Women Forum in Lebanon organized in Tripoli, in collaboration with Najdeh Association and CAFOD, a British NGO, a roundtable on violence against women.   The event was funded by the EU and included several presentations by representatives from Lebanese and Palestinian women organisations and provided a space for discussing the manifestations and negative impact of violence against women.

NCLW workshop on the national strategy for Lebanese women || Newspapers (Arabic)

The National Commission for Lebanese Women (NCLW) organized a day-long workshop to discuss the national strategy for Lebanese women developed by the Commission and recently approved by the government. The strategy has as one of its key objectives to mainstream gender in government organizations through activating the role of gender focal points located in various ministries and public institutions.
During the workshop, the discussions revolved around the concept of gender and how it is linked to social discrimination based on sect, religion, gender and color. Furthermore, the practical needs of women in all work sectors and the strategies of the national strategy were reviewed and discussed.
There was a general agreement among the participants on the importance of implementation of all international treaties, conventions and human rights declarations signed by the Government of Lebanon. This particularly requires the lifting of all reservations regarding the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

Women’s Committee of the Future Movement’s Seminar on CEDAW || Newspapers (Arabic)

The Women's Committee of the Future Movement organized in Beirut a seminar on the Convention for the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women as part of FM’s efforts to strengthen women’s political participation. The seminar sought to raise awareness about the Convention, its key areas of concerns and its implementation.  A reminder that Lebanon has already signed and ratified the Convention in 1996 but placed a number of its clauses under reservation, namely:

  • Clause 1 of the article (16) on equal rights in the family
  • Clause 1 of the article (29) on dispute between two or more States Parties concerning the interpretation or application of the present Convention
  • Clause 2 of the article (9) on equal rights to transmit nationality

The seminar was organised within the franework of the Future movement's effort to strengthen women's political participation.

Women’s Affairs Committee’s workshop on Women and the Municipality || Newspapers (Arabic)

The Women Affairs Committee of Amal Movement organized a workshop entitled, The Role of Women in the Reviving Municipal Work.  The workshop was attended by more than 90 women including representatives of political parties, trade unions, and various social, health and educational organizations and was convened in implementation of the recommendations of the First National Municipal Seminar held in 2011at UNESCO.  .

Ministry of Education: No increase on private tuition fees, all Syrians and Lebanese are welcomed in public schools || Newspapers (Arabic)

The Minister of Education Hassan Diab assured that public schools will not discriminate between Syrians or Lebanese students and that all student applicants will receive equal treatment.
Diab indicated that school books for up to the 9th grade level (Brevet) will be provided to all students of public schools for free; thus abiding by government policies on compulsory and free basic education.
The Minister further stated that tuition fees should not increase as long as the draft law regarding the new salary scales is not endorsed by the Lebanese Parliament. The private sector should adhere to the current regulation and particularly the decree no. 515.
The Minister of Education assured that 50 per cent of the budget allocations to support public school funds will be transferred at the beginning of the school year. The Ministry revealed his ministry plans to hire an additional 335 high school teachers who finished the required diplomas from the Faculty of Pedagogy. The Ministry also will to provide work placements to the excess number of preschool and basic education teachers who passed the preparatory levels, thus honoring the latest decision approved by the Parliament.

Ministerial Committee to study the Nationality Law amendments || Newspapers (Arabic)

The Ministerial Committee is studying the Nationality Law in a session held yesterday to discuss its amendements.  The session was led by the Vice Prime Minister, Samir Mokbel.  Also present included Ministers Marwan Charbel, Adnan Mansour, Chakib Kartbaoui, and Salim Jraissati. Following the session Mokbel stated that the committee followed up on the previous discussions.  The statistics was presented by the Ministry of Interior and reviewed by the Ministers.  It was determined that the subject needs further study and thus, will need more sessions to discuss it.

Women leaders meet to tackle gender inequality || Newspapers

The Young Arab Women Leaders: The Voice of the Future workshop on Thursday brought together young women leaders across Lebanon and the region to discuss the importance of gender equality in the Arab world. The Arab International Women’s Forum held the conference in partnership with PwC and the Institute of Women’s Studies in the Arab World at the Lebanese American University. The conference aimed at teaching participants how to transform obstacles due to gender into success stories. (The Daily Star)
