Shutdown of website documenting assaults against MWDWs

30-4-2019

The Matn Judge of Urgent Matters, Ralf Karkabi, issued a decision on April 18 requiring the shutdown of ‘This is Lebanon’ website documenting assaults against migrant domestic workers in the country. Recalling, the developers of said portal, a migrant worker and his wife, have emigrated to Canada. The ruling was reportedly based on a petition submitted by lawyer Ceasar Jbarah (son of Jdeideh mayor in Matn area), after the website published a news heading, ‘Ceasar Jbarah, a violent man’. It included a testimony by a Filipino help who left his house last March, in addition to testimonies by two other MWDWs who worked for him, stating accounts of harassment by the family and delay in payment of salaries. On the above ruling, Al Akhbar spoke to administrators of ‘This is Lebanon’s’ Facebook page who described the judge’s verdict as demeaning to the Lebanese State which “seems terrified by the voices of migrant domestic workers and wants to suppress them.” We want to say that the sponsorship (Kafala) system has become deeply rooted in society, starting from employer families and recruitment agencies up to the higher posts in the government. For her part, Legal Agenda lawyer, Ghida Franjieh, noted that the judge’s decision is part of a trend aimed to prevent MWDWs from uncovering violations against them throughout the period of their work in Lebanon, reducing any chance of accountability for abusing employers. The head of Beirut’s Traders’ Association, Nicola Shamas, warned on April 25 of the grave situation in all sectors, which is now threatening national industry and trade in the whole country, pointing to the alarming number of closed establishments and shops since more than a year. Based on available data from concerned market committees, Shamas said, the closed shops recorded so far are: 40 shops in Ashrafieh (representing nearly 10% of the total), 50 shops in Rmeil, Jeitawi, Mar Mkhail and Jemayze (13%), 30 shops in Hamra (5%), 25 shops in Barbour (5%), in addition to 12 shops in Mar Elias (4%), 18 shops in Corniche Mazraa/Nweiri locality and 12 in Mseitbeh area. Shamas stressed that the harsh reality is jeopardizing the remaining surviving establishments if not dealt with rigorously. One of the urgent measures that need to be taken is shutting down illegal shops, curbing the phenomenon of smuggling and suspending all court procedures by banks against commercial institutions. In a related development, Al Akhbar newspaper cited owners of shops in Mar Elias Souk who complained that all their marketing promotions to attract customers have failed, including large discounts and special offers on their items. Empowering young women in ICT

30-4-2019

On the occasion of the International Girls in ICT Day, which falls on April 25 of each year, the secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Yousef Athemeyn, on Wednesday urged member states and relevant institutions to join in the international efforts to empower young women and girls to study and work in the sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics and ICT sectors (STEM). Athemeyn pointed out that the Seventh Ministerial Conference on Women in Burkina Faso issued a resolution adopted by the foreign ministers conference held last month in Abu Dhabi advising member states to take legislative and executive measures for the provision of science programs for women in order to bridge the gap between their education and the labor market requirements. The ICT sector, Athemeyn noted, is in need of talents, offering a broad opportunity for young women who are highly qualified in technology. He called on the international community to work harder to provide similar programs in conflict areas. (Al Hayat, April 24, 2019)

Modesty Design Show in Beirut, May 3 to 4

25-4-2019

In partnership with Dubai Fashion Week, Maryam Attar and Aya Hamud will be organizing the Modest Show in Lebanon between May 3 and 4 at the Lancaster Eden Bay Hotel from 10 am to 10 pm. The idea of the event started from Istanbul and moved to London then Dubai and Jakarta. According to Al Mustaqbal electronic portal, Attar and Hamud wanted it to be a forum that stimulates social, human and creative communication through hosting big names in the world of fashion, attracting the best of modest fashion brands, designers and influencers in some 26 countries. “We have noticed an interest in the country for the modest attire, which prompted us to kick off the second season from Lebanon, hoping this will open the door for similar future activities,” Hamud said. The show will also allocate an area inspired by the month Ramadan, bringing together fashion mongers, shoppers, renowned bloggers and boutiques all in one place. Hamud said there is a general trend or belief that women resort to modest wear to conceal overweight or figure disproportions, while in reality it reflects a unique preference that needs to be publicly acknowledged in all its aesthetic aspects.
