MP Tabsh submits My Nationality Campaign law proposal

The Future Movement MP, Rula Tabsh submitted yesterday a proposal for amending the Nationality Law giving Lebanese women the right to confer nationality to their children. In this respect, My Nationality Is a Right For Me And My Family Campaign lauded Tabsh’s move and promised to not allow any exceptions or conditionality to overstep equality between the Lebanese citizens, men and women. The Campaign recalled a meeting on June 19, 2018 during which it handed its draft law to Tabsh, noting that the latter had committed to the proposal and to the principles of gender equality and elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. The Campaign clarified that currently, there are two proposals to this effect in the Legislature, the first filed by MP Hadi Abul Hissen on May 16, 2018, and the second by Tabsh on May 14, 2019. On the other hand, An Nahar newspaper reminded its readers today of the appeal made at the State Shura Council by the deputies of the Lebanese Forces and the Socialist Progressive Party to revoke the naturalization decree signed Minister on May 11, 2018 by the President of the Republic and the Prime (http://www.lkdg.org/node/17557), which still remains in the drawers of the Council. Noting, that the said decree has sparked a wide controversy for including Palestinian and Syrian names to be considered for naturalization (https://lkdg.org/ar/node/17509). Carpet weaving for Syrian women refugees in Arsaal

The Humanitarian and Development Attache at the UAE Embassy in Beirut concluded yesterday in Arsaal a training session on traditional carpet weaving, with the support of Sharjah Charity International, in cooperation with Dar Al Fatwa Relief and Humanitarian Aid Association. Around 40 Syrian women refugees participated in the 3-month workshop and received certificates of appreciation stating that they have successfully completed the course to develop their capacities and skills. On the occasion, the UAE Ambassador, Hamad Saeed Shamsi, stressed that women’s empowerment contributes to creating radical change to their conventional roles, especially that they have become essential partners in building societies. Fungicides in 80% of spices and herbs of Lebanese markets

A new study published by Beirut Arab University in cooperation with Italian ISPA BARI, has revealed the extensive presence of fungicides that are dangerous to human health in the spices and herbs sold on the Lebanese markets. The above study which targeted 94 samples of spices and 38 of herbs imported from around 15 countries, has shown that they are infected with 11 out of 12 types of carcinogenic toxins. It also indicated that 80% of the samples were contaminated with one specific fungal toxin, while 40% were infected with more than one type, noting that such toxins multiply due to poor storage and high humidity levels. The results of above study pointed out that 3 types of spices, including red pepper, paprika and cloves, in addition to two herbs, like rosemary and sage, are polluted with fungal toxins exceeding the internationally permitted levels. To recall, the study, which was conducted in response to a request by WHO to monitor the levels of fungal toxins in foods sold in the local markets, was supervised by the head of the nutrition department at BAU, Dr. Nada Durra. The latter said she did not want to alarm the Lebanese people, pointing to some local sources of spices that are unadulterated, specifically those exported to EU countries. Boosting the procurement of Lebanese products by international organizations

The ministers of social affairs and industry, Richard Kuyumdjian, and Wael Abu Faour, discussed yesterday with the UN Resident Coordinator, Philip Lazarinni, ways to encourage international organizations operating in Lebanon to utilize made-in-Lebanon products. Following the meeting, Abu Faour revealed that a joint committee was formed, comprising the industry and social affairs ministries, the Lebanese Industrialists Association and international organizations to set up a mechanism for the procurement of Lebanese goods by said organizations. Kuyumdjian, for his part, said the meeting with Larizanni came to reassure UN agencies in the country to buy and use Lebanese products. (An Nahar, May 14, 2019)

‘Women, Power and Politics’ at Bayt Beirut

In partnership with URIKA Agency and Lebanon Support, Hivos International organized on May 9 an exhibition entitled ‘Women, Power and Politics: Timelines and Milestones’ at Bayt Beirut, under the patronage of NCLW president, Claudine Aoun Rukuz. This event comes as part of Women Empowered for Leadership (WE4L) program with the support of the Netherlands Funding Leadership and Opportunities for Women (FLOW). The exhibition reportedly seeks to document women leaders in society, culture and politics as well as prominent figures in feminist movements in the country, and the major historical, social and political events that shaped and influenced such movements, in addition to the legal and political achievements and gains they have made. The timeline sheds light on a collection of stories, struggles and contributions experienced by women in Lebanon. WE4L coordinator, Mira Buchmuny, said the exhibition is the best way to reach women and girls through narrating our shared history, in an interactive framework targeting a broader audience excited to visit the website on Lebanon’s feminist movement: womeninleadership.hivos.org/timeline/ar. Iran grants citizenship to children born to Iranian mothers and non-Iranian fathers

The Iranian Parliament ratified on May 12 the outlines of a draft nationality law sanctioning the conferral of citizenship to children of Iranian mothers married to non-Iranians. The bill was adopted by 188 votes in favor, 20 votes against and 3 abstentions. This is pending the endorsement by the Guardian Council (GC), the amendment of Article 976 of the Civil Code, which currently allows the transfer of nationality to children from mixed marriages, only if the father was Iranian. Noting that thousands of children born in Iran are not recognized as Iranian citizens, specifically those born from Afghan fathers and Iranian mothers, a fact that has sparked a social controversy for quite some time now. MWDW: Body of Ethiopian woman discovered in Jbeil, another arrested in Saida

Three weeks after transferring the body of an Ethiopian migrant domestic worker from inside her employer’s house in Byaqut-Metn (c.f: https://bit.ly/2V2qmH3), the Civil Defense General Directorate announced in a statement that, on May 12, that its squads moved the body of an Ehiopian MWDW from Jbeil, Byblos to the Government-run Bwar Hospital. Earlier, security forces arrived at the scene for investigation. This new incident raised the total number of killed MWDWs in Lebanon to 4 women since the start of this year. On the other hand, an Ethiopian MWDW killed her elderly semi-paralyzed employer inside her home in Hlaliyeh, Saida in the South. Al Mustaqbal website wrote that, for no clear motive, Gitench Tolori, Ethiopian MWDW, 33 years, killed N.H, 83 years, following a temper tantrum. The worker, at first, admitted the crime, but denied later that she was aware of what she did. Al Mustaqbal portal said that at an initial trial during which Tolori reiterated her statements, the Saida Criminal Court sentenced her to 15 years of hard labor. However, after the ruling was overturned by her attorney, the Criminal Court of Cassation decided to retry the convict stating that she was not responsible for a crime committed in a state of insanity and schizophrenia, and decided to put her in a custodian shelter pending her mental recovery. Graduation of female members of Republican Guard

The Republican Guard Brigade hosted on May 9 the graduation ceremony of women soldiers who completed their assigned training period. The ceremony was headed by Deputy Brigade Commander, Colonel Bassam Helou representing Army Commander General Joseph Aoun, in the presence of instructors and the graduates’ parents. In his word, Helou pointed out that the Army is the shield for the country’s security and stability, calling for protecting the great accomplishments achieved so far and safeguarding the greater national interest. The ceremony closed with a military parade with the participation of the graduating female soldiers. (Al Diyar, May 11, 2019)

Student competition as part of child marriage campaigning

The Lebanese Democratic Women’s Gathering (RDFL) announced on May 11 the results of a national art competition for school and university students on child marriage in Lebanon. The competition to recall, comes as part of the #NotBefore18 campaign launched by the RDFL to end child marriage and set18 as the minimum legal age for marriage for both males and females without exceptions. Noting, that the competition, organized by RDFL, in cooperation with the ministry of education and the support of IM Swedish, is the first expressive and art contest that addresses the topic. Participants were asked to creatively elaborate in text, poetry, painting or song lyrics the issue of the child marriage with the aim to raise awareness among students on the urgency of ending the phenomenon. More than 8000 students from some 88 public and private schools and colleges across Lebanon took part in the competition. On the occasion, RDFL campaign and communication coordinator, Hayat Mirshad, criticized the government and legislature’s slackness in ratifying a civil law that protects children from early marriage. She stressed that Lebanon does not commit or comply with relevant international agreements, like the Convention on the Rights of the Child and CEDAW, under the discriminatory personal status laws in effect in the country. Sana Hamzeh from Tripoli receives Barbara Chester Award

Dr. Sana Hanzeh, clinical Advisor of the Restart Center for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture in Lebanon, received the 8th Barbara Chester Award by the US based Hopi Foundation. Noting, that the award is granted to psychotherapists who follow international standards in providing healing services for victims of torture, specifically, those with outstanding achievements in the field. On the award, Hamzeh considered it an added value to humanitarian work in the country and an international recognition of the importance of the rehabilitation of said victim. She said that since the inception of Restart in 1996, she has treated about 20,000 survivors and worked for the empowerment of refugees and persons suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder, PTSD, and other conditions. Similarly, the minister of state for economic empowerment of women and youth, Violette Safadi, thanked Hamzeh for contributing to promoting Lebanon’s image to this effect, saying, “Congratulations for the humanitarian award in a world where injustice is mounting by day.” Al Mustaqbal, May 12, 2019
