Free Patriotic Movement seminar on “Women and Politics” || Newspapers (Arabic)

1-11-2012

The women committee of the Free Patriotic Movement organized yesterday in Sine el Fil a seminar on the issue of women and politics, with the participation of President of Sagesse University, Monsignor Kameel Mubarak and Doctor Laila Rahbani as speakers.
In his intervention, Monsignor Mubarak indicated that only in mentally, socially and emotionally dark societies will women’s role be neglected. He added that history points out to an active social and political role of women in all eras, before and after Christ particularly since the number of women exceeds that of men. He also stated that working in politics and public affairs in one of the most honorable positions for both men and women, while emphasizing that in order to undertake those roles both men and women will need to be well educated, selfless, honest and ethical.
For her part, Laila Rahbani indicated that despite the fact that Lebanon was the first Arab country to give the women the right to vote in 1953, women representation in politics is still modest and take place only in special cases when women inherit that position form a father, brother or husband, despite their prominent role in the fight for independence and liberation. Rahbani linked weak women political representation to 3 key factors: women’s own personality, lack of community support and sectarianism, adding that the dominant political circles also feel threatened by change.

Lebanese women triumph over cancer || Newspapers (Arabic)

31-10-2012

On the occasion of the international month for raising awareness on breast cancer, the Assafir newspaper published a report on the experiences of women survivors of cancer.  In her testimonial Leila shared that she discovered that she had breast cancer when she was going through regular check up tests although she did not feel any discomfort of any sort.  During her chemotherapy sessions, she lost her hair but remained strong and refused to stay at home but rather decided to go out and flaunt her conditions so as to serve as a role model for others. Suzan, another survivor, discovered that she had cancer one month before her marriage. She had a mastectomy then traveled to Germany to continue her treatment. The support of her fiancée played a major role in her healing process.

All interviewed women confirmed through their testimonials that mental health was the key for their success. They noted that women should keep their courage, talk about their disease and avoid isolating themselves. They also encouraged women not to neglect themselves and to undergo regular mammography which can lead to early detection. Many of these women are now helping various associations involved in breast cancer programmes as they try to spread awareness on the disease and its prevention.  These women are indeed Arab models of courage in the fight against cancer.

First lady Ms. Wafa Sleiman: Yes for women's quota and for women's right to transmit nationality || Newspapers (Arabic)

30-10-2012

In an interview with An Nahar newspaper, First Lady Wafa Sleiman shared her efforts to uphold the role of women in Lebanon notably the recent decree of 10% women's quota in the upcoming elections as well as her support to women's right to transmit nationality to her children when her spouse is a non-national.
Sleiman considered that the women's quota is an opportunity for women to prove themselves in the public sphere.  She noted that it is impossible to initiate women's effective political participation except through the law proposal of a 10% quota which has now been forwarded to Parliament.
On the question of women's right to transmit nationality to their children, Sleiman indicated that an in-depth study for the reform of the law was prepared by former Ministers Bahige Tabbarah and Ziad Baroud and with the participation of the National Commission for Lebanese Women (the NCLW), Ms. Lina Abou-Habib (of the Women's Right to Nationality Campaign) as well as Judge John Azzi.  Sleiman confirmed that the study has been sent to the newly set up ministerial committee headed by Minister Samir Mokbel but no answer was received thus far.
Ms. Sleiman also noted the main achievements of the NCLW, notably the National Strategy for Women, which was effectively put in place in 2012 and which will take effect until 2021.  She added that a number of projects are now being implemented such as for instance the "Success" project in collaboration with Fransabank which provides medium sized loans to women.  NCLW also spearheaded a new law allowing women to open bank accounts for their children and ensuring that all banks are complying with this law.
Finally, Sleiman alluded to the "Wayn Ba3dna" campaign which contributed to the reform of 3 out of 14 laws and decrees that need to be reformed to secure women's economic rights.  She also confirmed that new laws ensuring equality in succession taxes, income tax and national defense were promulgated in addition to a decree which provides similar maternity rights to women employed in the private and public sectors.

"Chayef Halak" campaign speaks out on racisms in the Lebanese society || Newspapers (Arabic)

30-10-2012

The "Chayef Halak" campaign is pointing a finger on a number of social ills in Lebanon, notably racism, sectarianism and corruption through a number of video clips now shown on LBC-I since June 2011.  All throughout the past period, the Campaign has highlighted many cases including the ways in which people use loopholes in the laws.  The examples are drawn from local realities such as for instance the case of migrant women domestic workers.  The video clip in this case shows a Lebanese woman, a 'Madam" as she likes to call herself, sitting in her clean and neat house which is due to the work of her Ethiopian maid.  The Lebanese Madam says that she treats her maid "as a member of her family" and she also adds that she takes "her Srilankan" with her in all her outings and ensures that she is well dressed and gets her different cleaning products.  This, according to the Madam, is an example of good treatment and the maid is in want for nothing except her own passport which is confiscated by her employer....

According to the campaign website, the idea behind this initiative is to engage citizens in changing what is wrong in their country and in their own social behavior.  The campaign is the result of collaboration between LBCI and the BBDO Impact advertising firm and is part of a citizen media initiative.

In an interview with the Assafir newspaper, the Marketing Director of BBMO Impact, Omar Sadek, indicated that the idea was first conceived because the initiators had had enough of the situation in the country and wanted to do something to change it especially that the state remains largely ineffective in addressing these issue.

When asked about the impact of the campaign on overall public opinion in the country, Sadek added that the campaign facebook page has 46000 likes hit and more than 3000 persons viewed the latest campaign video clip only four days after it was released on You Tube, and that the campaign has 11000 followers on Twitter.  Sadek concluded that "Lebanon is better with this campaign than without it even if its impact is limited".
