EU promotes the paintings of woman artist from the South

7-2-2020

The National News Agency (NNA) yesterday spotlighted the journey of Hamah Yahiya, a southern farmer and artist in her sixties, living in the Nabatiyeh town of Adshit. Hamdah planted and sold tobacco to provide for her family while enjoying her scarce free time in painting, NNA reported. Boasting a passion for drawing since childhood, Yahya said she passed most of her time in nature drawing trees, water springs, the threshing floor, the thresher machine and the hand mill. In the beginning, Hamdah said, she could not afford to buy the tools that accentuate the colors of the natural scenery. Whereas, her husband made a point that the precision of her work has attracted many artists who encouraged her to display her pieces of art in exhibitions. EU officials, who lauded her work, also provided her with the necessary painting and art supplies. Hamdah’s daughter bragged that her mother could have become an internationally renowned artist if she enrolled in a fine arts school. Instead, she chose farming, which is a source of pride for her family. For his part, the painter and art critic, Nizar Faour, said he saw in Yayha’s paintings an original and lofty art laden with messages. She depicts the simplicity of living and the backdrop of a rural artist who kept an almost annihilated lifestyle, Faour expounded. He described some of her paintings which communicated village customs and traditions, like for example the women who gather the tobacco leaves or carry water jars on their heads or bake bread on saj (baking tin). Sale of a Tunisian girl on website sparks anger

7-2-2020

An advertisement published by a Tunisian citizen announcing the sale of a girl child (3 years) on a famous online shopping portal has sparked extreme rage and resentment on social media and mainstream media. In the details, a Tunisian person posted an ad for selling a girl for 3500 Dinar (1100 euros) under the item ‘girls for sale’. He attached photos and a caption which read: “A child girl for sale. Anyone interested in buying, please call me on the following number. My daughter is good mannered. She is three.” Commenting, the head of Tunisia Youth Organization, Ayman Katri, posted the following on Facebook, “How can a licensed ecommerce business be allowed to publish a ‘child girl for sale’ ad under the sale item ‘girls for sale’. Katri warned: “We should not sit back and do nothing until a day comes when we see hypes promoting terrorism, sales of weapons or sex trade after this appalling one.” The Youth Organization, he maintained, will struggle by all available means to restrain electronic crimes, saying it will report to relevant authorities what has been published. American female astronaut breaks record for longest time in space

7-2-2020

American astronaut Christina Kock, 42, returned to earth yesterday after 328 consecutive days, nearly 11 months, at the international space station, breaking the previous record of 289 days set by Peggy Whitson. Two days before her landing, Kock told NBC on Tuesday that she is going to miss the ‘zero gravity’. “There is a real pleasure in living in a place where you can jump from floor to ceiling whenever you like,” she boasted. Kock mentioned that Whitson, 59, who completed three space missions, remains her hero and role model, irrespective of the newly set record. Kock, an American engineer, to recall, has participated in the first all-female spacewalk alongside American marine biologist, Jessica Meir, in October 2019. (An Nahar, February 7, 2020)

Ministerial committee for food security, cooperation with Germany in food industries

6-2-2020

The head of the Association for the Importers and Traders of Agricultural Production Requirements in Lebanon, head of the Agriculture Committee at Lebanon’s Chamber, Michel Akl, held a press conference yesterday under the theme, ‘The impact of public debt and banking measures on the agricultural sector in Lebanon’. Akl pointed out that past economic policies have long relinquished the national productive sectors, and at the same time, did not revise or upgrade trade agreements, hence causing a decline in investments in productive sectors of commodities and services while boosting interests. The work of the agriculture ministry in the wake of the cabinet’s winning confidence should focus on restoring the role of agriculture within the national economic cycle and the provision of food security for all of Lebanon, Akl maintained. For his part, the director general of the ministry of agriculture, Louis Lahud, disclosed that a committee for food security has been formed by the current minister of agriculture and culture, Abbas Mortada. On the other hand, the head of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture for Tripoli and the North, Toufic Dabousi, met yesterday with a delegation of the German Agency for International Development (GIZ). Agreement was reached to put into practice priorities that underpin GIZ’s prospects in food industries, especially in the milk, apple and olive sectors. (Al Diyar, February, 5, 6, 2020)

Promoting social and solidarity economy with EU assistance

5-2-2020

Under the patronage of the labor ministry and the General Labor Union, BCTS (Business Consultancy and Training Services) launched yesterday the ‘Reinforcing Social and Solidarity Economy for the Unemployed, Uneducated and Refugees’ project, known as ‘MoreThanAJob’ project. To recall, this initiative is funded by the European Union under the ENI CBC MED program. BCTS managing partner, Wafaa Haidamus, pointed out that the 3-year undertaking aims at boosting the social inclusion of the most vulnerable, unemployed populations. The project, Haidamus explained, is different from similar initiatives as it seeks to address the key issue through studying the policies and systems of public institutions operating in the field of labor and training, like for example, ministries of labor, education and social affairs. It will seek to develop the present structures to target groups of unemployed and uneducated people as well as refugees. Haidamus stressed that MoreThanAJob project seeks to mobilise the capacities of concerned organizations with the aim of creating new jobs. (An Nahar, February 5, 2020)

Follow-up of National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security

5-2-2020

In the framework of her visits to officials for working out the implementation of the UN Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (https://bit.ly/2GUPCW7), NCLW president, Claudine Aoun Rukuz met yesterday with the newly appointed minister of defense, deputy prime minister, Zeina Akar Adra. Discussions centered on adopted mechanisms for the implementation phase of above resolution and procedures to be taken by the Lebanese government to activate the role of women in securing the conditions for peace and security. These should be reportedly based on the acknowledgment by the UN resolution of the significance of women’s engagement in the armed forces and their pivotal role in building societies and leading reform. Recalling, that the draft ministerial statement contained 5 clauses involving women’s rights (https://lkdg.org/en/node/19205), including those that require the enactment of the Cabinet decision related to the above UN Resolution. Ministerial statement to promote and protect agriculture

4-2-2020

The draft ministerial statement mentioned agriculture in two of its clauses. The first encouraged traditional agriculture, like tobacco, citrus, apples, grains and grapevine, in addition to promoting agricultural extension, rural preparedness, collaboration with the Customs to control smuggling of agricultural goods and lastly animal husbandry. The second clause involved boosting exports through support to local industries, agriculture and services, in addition to the enforcement of exceptional tax measures. In a related vein, and in its issue of January 28, An Nahar mentioned the draft law which criminalized acts of smuggling, that was sent on January 9 to the former minister of finance by the Regie to be referred to the cabinet and the legislature for approval. The spurt of events and the resignation of the previous government has, however, obstructed this, An Nahar said. According to the proposed law, any party found to import or attempt to import tobacco products by way of smuggling will be penalized by three months to three year-imprisonment and fined with LBP 1 million to 5 million. Meanwhile, the Regie chairman, Nassif Seqlawi, stood firm with the requests of a delegation of industrialists who visited him on January 28 demanding priority to domestic production in purchasing raw material for the tobacco industry. On the other hand, the new minister of agriculture, Abbas Murtada, on January 29, underlined the importance of regulating fishery and improving fishermen’s capacities, besides the strict application of protection standards and the benefits expanded to fishermen as a result of this compliance. To name some, the ban of the use of drift nets and speeding up approval of the draft bill prepared by the ministry related to aquaculture. On the same day, Murtada announced the launch of a hotline for receiving complaints by citizens, clarifying that every Lebanese can be a partner to support agricultural production and defend national economic. The hotline: 01/1664621 - 01 / 821300. (An Nahar, Al Diyar, January 28, 30 and February 3, 2020)

Nationality Campaign criticizes the nationality clause in ministerial statement

4-2-2020

At long last, the ministerial statement draft leaked on Sunday (https://lkdg.org/ar/node/19199), included flawed provisions on women rights, notably a clause about Lebanese women right to nationality stipulating the following: "Recognition, in principle, of the right of the Lebanese mother to grant nationality to her children, while at the same time, creating judicial mechanisms that weigh the country's exceptional conditions." In the first reaction to the above draft, My Nationality is a Right for Me and My Children Campaign criticized the subject clause analyzing every phrase it embraced, noting that it has been formulated tortuously and has been laden with intimidation and extortion. The Campaign questioned the meaning of ‘initial recognition’ after so many years of struggle by women to this end, and disagreed with the fact that the husband be excluded from this right while restricting it to children! It also questioned the so-termed ‘judiciary control mechanism’, arguing that discriminatory laws require the intervention of the judiciary to be amended or re-legislated and not the rights of women and mothers. My Nationality Campaign slated the phrase ‘the country’s exceptional conditions’ in association with the old argument of the ‘unique status’ of Lebanon that has prevented the amendment of the nationality bill under the pretext that the time was not now to pass the law. In conclusion, the Campaign demanded a brisk and final ratification of this right through a fair, unprejudiced and inclusive law within a procedural system that encourages implementation rather than rejection or tolerability. Recalling, that the provision on women’s rights contained in the ministerial draft, namely in its first clause on reforms, has requested the stepping up of laws that protect women and maintain their rights, namely those involving domestic violence, representation quota and the nationality law as mentioned above. It further stressed the need to implement a cabinet decision related to the UN Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security, as well the launch of a legal workshop aimed to upgrade laws to the effect of ensuring basic freedoms and human rights, achieving gender equality and protecting marginalized groups. US gender pay gap narrows

3-2-2020

The rate of female participation in the US labor market remains lower compared to that of males, An Nahar reported on Saturday. The gender pay gap, however, has been significantly reduced in the period between 1980 and 2018, according to a study published on Thursday by the independent Pew Research Center. The author of the report pointed out that improvements women made in their wages resulted from the rapid growth in jobs that require social skills and female specialization in the areas of guidance, counseling, trade and therapy. In less than 40 years, the average hourly wage of women jumped from USD 15 to USD 22 (that is 45%) against USD 23 to USD 26 (only 14%) for men, the report said. In conclusion, the researcher associated the gender pay gap with multiple factors, that can be measured like professional skills, educational achievement, professional membership in unions and working hours. Other factors which cannot be measured, include discrimination, network of professional relationships and maternity and household responsibilities. (An Nahar, January 31, 2020)
