Women-sponsored export facility

14-1-2020

In collaboration with the Investment Development Authority of Lebanon (IDAL), Women Leaders Council of Lebanon (WLC) kicked off an export facility to support Lebanese companies to export their production. During the ceremony, WLC president, Madiha Rislan, said the initiative seeks to increase the volume of Lebanese exports in an attempt to save local firms and the economy from collapsing. Lebanese establishments are currently going through difficult times, Rislan said, stressing the need to prop them by all legal means at hand. She lauded the Council’s efforts to inspire Lebanese women to invest in youth, create more jobs and improve exports. A statement issued by WLC pointed out that the export facility or division, in coordination with the ministry of economy and the Federation of Lebanese Chambers, will work to introduce products who partners are from these firms, to global markets, notably Saudi Arabia. It will support them to participate in IDAl-run initiatives as well as in international exhibitions. (Al Diyar, January 14, 2020)

A new class of six women and seven men have graduated from the space agency NASA, and are now eligible for spaceflight assignments after completing a two and a half year training course at the space agency, An Nahar reported yesterday. The new cohort, nicknamed ‘The Turtles”, reflects an approach to increase female representation and diversity within NASA, An Nahar said. The latter pointed out that among the female crew, is the Iranian, Yasmine Mokbili, MIT graduate, who was a helicopter pilot before joining the NASA. Mokbili was known as a tough woman when she flew an attack helicopter in Afghanistan before becoming the first US astronaut of Iranian origin. In an interview with AFP, Mokbili said she hoped she would become a role model for others of similar ethnicities and backgrounds. (An Nahar, January 13, 2020)

Lebanese women's football: Impressive achievements despite poor infrastructure

13-1-2020

Al Akhbar newspaper drew attention to the recent victories scored by the Lebanese Women National Teams U-18 and U-15 in less than a month in West Asia. With the beginning of women’s soccer 12 years ago, no one expected Lebanon’s team to reap such achievements beyond the borders, Al Akhbar wrote, saying the game today is heading towards a brighter future. The newspaper went on to say, that the women’s team’s win in 2015 of the Arab Championship, has changed the outlook to female footballers, especially with the expansion of teams and the growing acceptance by parents of their daughters joining this kind of sports. The Asian accomplishment has been an important milestone for seizing more victories. In its analysis, Al Akhbar said that when playing with international teams whose members receive daily training, the Lebanese team realized a disproportion in the level of performance, which inspired girls to train individually in order to compensate the inadequate infrastructure and unavailable public spaces for soccer players to train. On this, the women’s team coach, Wael Gharzeddine, who accompanied the players, said the young women footballers boast a unique footballing perspective, but they need urgent physical training. Similarly, couch Hagop Demerjian, while praising the exceptional performance of the U-15 team, said it could have been better if the fitness preparation program was completed. However, speedy assimilation by the girls of what is required of them, redressed the balance. (Al Akhbar, January 11, 2020)

Event in Beirut highlights women’s historical musical contribution

13-1-2020

Metro al Madina (located in Hamra) presents this Wednesday a musical “3awalem Shari3 3imadeddine”, which is a recital of popular songs sung by renowned performers in the period between the end of the 19th Century and the early 20th Century. The show seeks to revive the role of women in the music industry during that era. It highlights the involvement of women described by some orientalists as simply prostitutes, whereas in reality they were highly-proficient vocalizers, like for example, Munira al Mahdiya, Aziza Hilmi, Bahiya Mahlawiya, Aisha Nada and Samha al Baghdadiya. Among the popular hits to be auditioned, are ‘Eh ra’yak bi khafafti’, ‘Ala baladi balad ummi’ and others. Recalling, that Imadeddine Street in Cairo, Egypt, was the hotbed of the main theatres of that period (Opera Malak, Metropole, Al Rihani, Al Shaab). (Al Akhbar 13 January 2020)

Cannabis growers complain of Lebanese liquidity crisis!

13-1-2020

The cultivation of cannabis has been affected by the financial and economic crisis hitting Lebanon since October, Al Akhbar reported today. Despite a prosperous season which saw no destruction of the produce or raids on warehouses, the price of one unit of processed cannabis reached a record low. In addition, the price of the lease of one dunum of marijuana dropped to rates unprecedented even at the height of operations carried out by security forces to destroy the fields. Citing a concerned industrialist, Al Akhbar said sales are almost non-existent, explaining that the decline in prices was not the only blow, but it was also coupled with severe shortage in liquidity. “What is the use if we sell but cannot withdraw the money from the bank,” he complained. Another producer said the ‘business’ is no longer affordable, yet it remains more useful compared to the growing of potato and onion. The cost of planting one dunum of potato or onion stands at LBP one million, against only LBP 120,000 for cannabis, including the cost of seeds, land lease, weeding and irrigation. For his part, a cannabis farmer lamented the slashed prices, pointing out that the price of one unit of processed cannabis has shrunk by 100% compared to last year. It should be noted, that the legislature is studying the draft bill for the legalization of cannabis for medical use: https://bit.ly/382aZk2. (Al-Akhbar 13 January 2020)

Livelihoods: Disruptions in fuel, bread & electricity supplies, salaries drop 60% in purchasing power

10-1-2020

The fuel crisis returned, as announced the chief of owners of petrol station, George Brax, who warned of closure as a result of the continuing price hikes corresponding to the exchange rate of the US dollar which reached yesterday LBP 2350. He said fuel companies want to withdraw from the former arrangement threatening to impose 15% of the price of fuel in hard currency. Recalling, that in December 2019, the owners of petrol stations agreed to deduct a provisional value of LBP 475 of the royalty for each petrol plate in order to repay the full price of fuel in the Lebanese lira. On a related front, the head of the union of bakeries, Kazem Ibrahim, described as an ‘assault against the sector the monitoring by the Consumer Protection Authority of the price and weight of bread in Lebanese bakeries. He threatened of immediate suspension of work should any owner of a retail bakery be summoned to court. Meanwhile, An Nahar daily wrote that the electricity cuts are getting worse pointing to what the minister of energy said yesterday that the coming couple of days could be very difficult but that the electric power will be gradually restored as of this Saturday. An Nahar said Lebanon could plunge into darkness starting February, according to the former director general of the ministry, Ghassan Beydun. In turn, Al Akhbar newspaper reported that Banque du Liban has refused to itemize the infant formula on the list of the basic commodities included in the circular of provision of the necessary credits for importation in the US dollar. This could threaten with the discontinuation of certain brands of imported milk, Al Akhbar said, pointing out that the caretaker health minister is expected to sign an ordinance today reducing the price of the infant formula after a one-month price freeze pending the approval of the Central Bank to secure the required credits. On the other hand, Al Akhbar indicated that the average monthly salary has lost more than 60% of its purchasing value, causing many Lebanese to give up the consumption of luxury and non-essential items. She sought to expand the segment of society which is familiar with and responsive to the notion of self-defense and self-protection. Atura stated that society was never a problem and did not stop her from realizing her ambitions at any stage, stressing that she did not compromise about one of her greatest childhood passions which is community service and the breaking of stereotypes of the submissive and conformist woman.
