Awareness video on early detection of breast cancer

13-10-2020

In a feature published yesterday, Al Diyar newspaper reported that 1 of 8 women in Lebanon are at risk of breast cancer. Citing the latest epidemiological statistics, Al Diyar underlined the importance of awareness campaigns for early detection of breast cancer, pointing to one campaign launched in Beirut at the beginning of October, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, by the Lebanese Breast Cancer Foundation (LBCF) and the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC). The campaign released a video of popular traditional baker Um Ali who was trained by a gynecologist. Using the dough, Um Ali indirectly demonstrated the breast self-exam to help women get the gestures out there and overcome the taboo while respecting women’s intimacy and traditions. LBCF vice president, Mirna Sabbah Hubbalah, said the aim of the video tutorial is to explain the self-exam, particularly in the time of corona which prevented many women from leaving home for the annual mammogram. Noting that the ministry of health did not provide free screenings this year due to the situation, Hubbalah reminded women of the importance of early detection, the self-exam and the X-ray once a year, especially for women over 40. Agriculture of Lebanon: Call for higher tobacco prices, apple fair in Baalbek

12-10-2020

During a meeting held in Mais el Jabal yesterday, Marjeyoun tobacco growers called on Speaker Nabih Berri to help increase the prices of tombac and tobacco supplies in the wake of the depreciation of the national currency and the corresponding decline in farmers’ purchasing power. The head of the Cooperative Association of Agricultural and Livestock Development in Mais el Jabal, Abbas Zahreddine, grieved the farmers’ anguish in the past years due to the hike in production costs in the absence of a unified price benchmark in southern towns. He demanded a quick release of farmers’ money in cash, notwithstanding the current condition of banks, in order to avoid a crisis similar to last year’s. On the other hand, the Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training, LOST, inaugurated on Saturday the annual apple fair in the Community Farm in the Baalbek Plains. This is the third farmers' market held with the aim to prop local production, provide wider opportunities and build direct producer-consumer relationships. The two-day event which embraced 51 households included a special booth for traditional home-made mouneh and honey, in addition to fun activities for kids and folkloric performances.  (Al Diyar, October 11, 12, 2020)

Yammine described the initiative as a window of hope for young Lebanese people that helps them develop their skills and acquire new ones that are in high demand by the labor market. She asked them not to miss out this opportunity and to apply now by selecting their desired courses within a list of more than 3,000 specialties. (More on the following link: (https://mol.unescwa.org/). Concurrently, and in an interview with An Nahar, the CEO of Park Innovation, Diana Jumblat, spoke about the youth targeted Chouf incubator which was founded in mid-2019. The initiative, she explained, keeps up with labor requirements and modern technology or the so-called knowledge-based economy, which gives students and the youth access to global markets and allow them to develop new skills. Park Innovation, Jumblat maintained, offers beneficiaries free and intensive programs to build their capacities and improve their skills, in addition to a start-up accelerator. It also provides dedicated workspaces, offices and hot desks with high-speed internet to attract young people and talents, as well as promote innovation in rural areas. Pregnant women suffering in the wake of Beirut blast

1-10-2020

UNFPA director, Asma Kordahi, disclosed yesterday that the Beirut port explosion has caused the displacement of about 300,000 persons, including 84,000 women inchildbearing age (15-49 years) in need of support in terms of reproductive health. Speaking to AFP, Kordahi revealed that, according to estimates, there are some 4600 pregnant women among the displaced, who require special prenatal and postnatal care. She stressed that the difficult economic conditions in the country have forced many women to rely on health centers, dispensaries and mobile clinics operated by international organizations in order to do the routine tests or for doctors’ consultations. Kordahi said UNFPA figures showed that within 7 weeks, around 600 to 700 women benefited from services provided by mobile clinics. She explained that the high demand on such clinics was not only for physical examination, but also for requesting feminine hygiene products, like sanitary napkins, especially tampons and period panties after the increase in the prices of some brands.
